Just found this out today while talking to my tint guy. Cars will still have to pass the OBDII test but everything else does not matter. Hopefully they will make the tint legal so no tickets can be issued.

I heard just the opposite about things like tint.
While it is true that as of some time in August the safety aspect of state inspections is no longer included, only emissions, this now gives the local and state police the job of governing such things as tint, tire condition, broken windshield, tail light, head light, etc.
I heard this from not only a state inspection facility but from local PD as well. They may actually ticket more for that stuff than ever before because no one else will be looking for it.
I wish they would have kept the safety part and did away with the damn emissions. I'd rather know the guy pulling up behind me at a light has good brakes and decent tires than he's "green". Clean tail pipe emissions means nothing to me while I'm being rearended by a car with faulty equipment. Wouldn't you agree??
listening to the news on the radio today--they did say that MV Inspec. will only check for emissions--NJ is just getting STUPID as the days go on--
STAN and TONY ...................AMEN!!!!!
Wayne...................AKA................LOCOMOTION
See, I just read that the emissions test if for vehicles only over 5 years old. So Does that mean when I go in 2 months, they are basically gonna slap a sticker on it?
Attached is the rules from MVC site.

Truer words could not have been typed!
I agree with everyone. Who cares how much emissions a vehicle puts out. Like Tony said I worry more about the guy/gal behind me being able to stop and things like that.
They are supposed to mailing out extension stickers so you won't even have to go to inspection until the car is 5 years old.
I can tell all of you this, we got a memo at work stating that since there were no longer going to be safety inspections it would be up to patrol officers to be more strict with equipment violations, ie tint, loud exhaust, cracked windshields, etc... So expect to be stopped more often. NJ has its head up its ass on this in my opinion. I would like to know that the car next to me has a front end that isn't about to drop out at highway speeds and has good brakes. In 2 years there will be so many pile of crap cars on the road
I should mention that i don't give tickets out for tint, exhaust "issues", or no front plate....and if you've seen my truck you understand why.
The initial summons loading should put the courts into overtime.
If the numbers I heard are correct, the state has claimed that "only" 6% of the vehicles inspected have failed for "major safety violations". With close to 2 million vehicles registered in our fair state, that mean that they are over 100,000 "unsafe" vehicles on our roads!!!
It would appear that the State of NJ assumes the Police have now all become mechanics. I would rather have police stick to moving violations and unlicensed./uninsured drivers than have them trying to cull the herd looking for faulty brakes or bald tires. I think the accidents will increase, the police paperwork will be tremendous and insurance companies may actually raise our rates based on the higher likelihood of accidents due to neglected maintenance. I once failed because my rearview mirror fell off on my way there. Annoying? You bet. But it needed to be fixed. Maybe cash for clunkers should be brought back?
