My 1971 Dodge Dart has a bit if rust on the front driver side frame and i was wondering what would be the best(correct) way of fixing this. Thank you for any help you can provide since this is my first time taking on a resto prodject and i am very egger to make this long trip.
Hi Michael--I am not an autobody type person but rust is rust--if it were me doing this I would take the rust down to metal using a drill with a wire wheel--prime it and then give it a coat of paint--unfortunately I don't know if there is a special primer or paint for frames--
BTW Michael I sent you a "PM" with some info about our organization please take some time to read it--Thank You--
Stan
If it's just surface rust, you could use POR15 right over it. More later.......
I worked for the marine corp as a corrosion removal and prevention technician on military tactical vehicles and equipment for two years. It depends how bad the rust is, but if its just surface rust the correct way to remove it is to sand blast it then undercoat it. (depending on what type of coating you are using you may have top prime the bare metal ) if its pitting then you need to grind it and sandblast it then undercoat. If it is litterally falling apart or you have holes eaten through it the only correct way to fix it is to replace the frame. But if you don't want to go that far you could see if someone is maybe willing to cut the rusted section out and fabricate a patch to weld in its place Whatever you do though make sure all rust is removed beore you coat it again because it will just come right back through the undercoat if there is any left over
if its surface rust you have to kill it and remove it whatever way you shose, seal it, and paint it. if its rotted out, you need to repair it. i can weld in patches or replace the rail if you need.
All good advice , this is a standard rust spot of this era due to leaking batteries. So check your battery tray, replacements are readily available & before you do any of the other steps neutralize the area with a baking soda and water solution cup of baking soda / gallon of water and let it air dry, if not the problem could come back and even flake off por15

As 67Abody pointed out, these are all good replies and you should be able to find the one that fits closest to your situation. A-bodies are a specialty of mine, I've been restoring them for over 20 years. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask.

thats cool, im getting ready to do my 3rd big block a body swap. i was going to do a 5.7 on this one but the bang for the buck just isnt there. its a very expensive swap.
If you want to do that big block swap with an original big block k-frame let me know, I have one in my shop.
thanks, but i have a spool mount small block K frame that i moved the mounts back for the 400. one of these years ill get the ball rolling.
