He GLUED it? What the heck... lol. Just cause he knew it was a project car does not mean you want him to use modeling cement... lol.

There are some real wackjobs out there in the automotive world... Sorta reminds me of when I restored my old '79 Vette after HS. The previous owner had used duct tape to keep everything under the car from dragging on the ground and had even wrapped around the trans to keep from leaking...

Keep at it though, your '73 will look awesome once you are done...

Hey Guys... the method you see in the picture to seal a tank is widely used and very inexpensive and lasts a long time. A metal epoxy is used with a big washerless sheet metal screw (meaning the washer is part of the screw). The screw is large so it bites good metal. Usually the top of the tank will hold water and rust or pit. In your case it rusted in a few spots. This repair is common for any type of tank including plastic balast tanks used on Docks or Rafts. They just us a different epoxy and works in wet conditions.

The down side to this repair is, once it fails you need to use a larger screw or buy a new tank. Also brazing or welding the tank takes a day. The tank needs to be drained and the fumes, which are more dangerous than the fuel, has to be vented out before you go near it.

A new tank is always the right way to go and make sure you inspect the body for open metal that can dig into the tank and use new stainless steel straps and oil resistant rubber that isolates the strap from direct contact with fuel tank too!

Good luck

No ones posted here in a while. Mike's car is turning into a bergen county project. I cleaned out his carburetor I opened her up and she's clean as a whistle. The previous owner did some weird things with the hoses. We'll update everyone as we go. Also we took the carb out because it wasn't starting and the battery is fine. Next step is going to be to replace the starter motor. Fortunately that's only a $40 part.

Just keep on the project it Will get done.

It took me and my body shop friends close to a year to get my 74 SE done. It started as a Gold with Gold Landau roof and as you can see by my AVATAR, I changed it quite a bit. My gas tank was shot as well and a new one was the only way to go. Fiberglass front fenders fit right on. Rear querters, complete floorpan (how's the one on your car). Mine was totally rotted out. BOY this is bringing back memorys. I did it back in 1985. You know, I still have the SE hood Ornament, Interested?

Walter
